CRITIC’S PICK: How would you like a close encounter with a black widow? Fernbank is inviting people to hang out with a bunch of arachnids in what they’re calling a “fully immersive experience,” allowing visitors to “walk through hundreds of scattering spiders along a glowing forest floor, bringing an animated spider to life, and even competing in a mating dance-off with a jumping peacock spider.” Spider anatomy, reproduction and growth, webs and silk, and spider senses will all be discussed. — Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

Special Lecture From Fear to Fascination: A Romance with Spiders
4:30 p.m.—5:30 p.m.

As a key contributor to “Spiders — From Fear to Fascination,” Dr. Rayor will share stories about spiders’ unusual biology, including their mating habits and methods for capturing prey. Dr. Rayor will discuss spiders’ importance for both the natural world as well as for humans and surprising industries like medicine and agriculture. Spiders are major predators of pest insects, and their venoms are being adapted for use in medicine and agriculture. Join us to hear hidden stories of the spiders featured in the exhibit.

Lecture tickets do not include museum or giant screen film admission but full Fernbank access prior to the lecture is available with General Admission tickets.
