Once Upon a Time: Animating Netflix’s ‘Nimona’

11:15 a.m. at SCADshow, Main Stage

In Netflix’s new animated feature Nimona, a knight framed for a tragic crime partners with a scrappy, shape-shifting teen to prove his innocence. But what if she’s the monster he’s sworn to destroy? Animation director Ted Ty unravels the strategy for adapting the bestselling graphic novel, creating multi-dimensional characters, and developing a techno-medieval landscape where magic and technology combine.

Theodore “Ted” Ty will be presented with the SCAD AnimationFest Outstanding Achievement in Animation Award prior to the Thursday primetime screening Sept. 28, 2023.

Meet executives from trailblazing Georgia-based studios and organizations for a discussion on the dynamic digital landscape in the Peach State. These industry insiders will share their perspectives on finding and producing successful animated series, major game titles, and digital media across all platforms.

SCAD Student Film Spotlight: The Making of ‘Vainglorious’

2:15 p.m. at SCADshow, Main Stage

Go behind the scenes with the creators of SCAD student fim Vainglorious. In the film, a skilled young boxer and a determined father clash in a traditional Nigerian boxing match, putting their resilience and pride to the ultimate test as everything they hold dear is on the line.

Transforming the Peach State with FuseFX

3:30 p.m. at SCADshow, Stage 2

One of the leading reasons Georgia is the number one filming location in the world is the vast locations and landscapes available to accommodate a wide variety of projects. When a story requires an iconic New York skyline or identifiable stretch of mountains, FuseFX has become a leader in turning Georgia locales into other cities and regions through their award-winning visual effects. In this SCAD AnimationFest session, join members of FuseFX’s VFX team for an illuminating presentation on the tools and strategy utilized in transforming Atlanta and the Peach State into recognizable environments for film and television projects.

Screening: ‘Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow’

7:30 p.m. at SCADshow, Main Stage

Preview Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow before it hits theaters. After being fired from his detective job following a mission gone awry, Inspector Sun boards a seemingly normal plane for a much-needed vacation. When an enigmatic millionaire receives a threat on his life, Sun is back on the case. Trapped in a web of lies, he must find the culprit before it’s too late. A Q&A session with producer Jason Kaminsky and screenwriter Rocco Pucillo will follow the screening.

The SCAD AnimationFest Outstanding Achievement in Animation award will be presented to Nimona animation director Theodore “Ted” Ty prior to the screening.
