NEWS BRIEF: Ahmaud Arbery killer begs for federal protection against death threats
Prison justice?
One of the gunmen who killed Ahmaud Arbery is asking that he serve much of his time behind bars in federal custody as opposed to a Georgia state prison. Travis McMichael, who on Thursday lost his bid for acquittal in violating Arbery’s civil rights, is citing multiple death threats against him and the huge numbers of homicides inside state lockups.
“His concern is that he will promptly be killed upon delivery to the state prison system for service of that sentence,” attorney Amy Lee Copeland told the court. “He has received numerous threats of death that are credible in light of all circumstances, and the government has a pending investigation into the Georgia DOC’s ability to keep inmates safe in a system where murder rates have tripled.” lawandcrime.com
