CL Critic Matthew Warhol Recommends: If nepotism always led to results the like of Alex Isley, Elon Musk would be my favorite businessman. Ms. Alex is the heir to the R&B/funk The Isley Brothers dynasty—her father is Ernie Isley. And for all the benefits that come with the name Isley, I’m sure filling those shoes is as monumental of a task as filling Shaquille O’Neil’s size 23s. And Alex is up to that task. She’s trained her whole life for it, having started classical music education at the age of 12. This shows in her seemingly effortless ability to pull strong emotion out of her voice, powerful, beauty, heartbreaking, all at once. After three albums and years of preparation, Isley finally got her breakout hit, 2021’s “Good & Plenty.” The song is a gorgeous three minutes of seduction, a beach sunset before a night of romance. At the age of 35, Alex Isley is getting her shot, and I only see her continuing to rise. — MW

Hailing from Los Angeles, Alex Isley comes from a musically-rich and versatile family. Her maternal grandmother was an opera singer, and began classically-training Alex at age 12, while her father, Ernie, and his brothers, are collectively the R&B/Funk pioneers, The Isley Brothers.Alex has collaborated with an array of artists, from Terrace Martin to Moses Sumney to Kendrick Lamar; she sang vocals on Lamar’s 2016 Grammy-winning, These Walls”. She also featured on PJ Morton The Piano Album (on “How Deep Is Your Love” as a duet with Morton).In November 2019, Alex and producer, Jack Dine, released a joint EP entitled Wilton. They followed with their singles, “Gone,” “Good & Plenty,” with Masego, “Mine,” and a later, a Good & Plenty Remix, with Lucky Daye. In 2020, Alex performed her own NPR Tiny Desk (Home Edition) and was featured on HBO’s Insecure series.In March 2022, Alex lent vocals to Lucky Daye latest album, Candydrip, as well as PJ Morton’s album, Watch The Sun performing on“Still Believe,” alongside PJ and Jill Scott. Most recently, Alex released the highly-anticipated joint album with Jack, Marigold.
