LEGO Robotics for Aspiring Filmmakers (Rising 5th to 7th Grade)

Monday June 11, 2018 09:00 AM EDT
Cost: $445-495

From the venue:

This camp is being held at Georgia Tech’s College of Design, 245 4th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30332.

Do you love LEGOs and robots? Do you like to take pictures and film the world around you? Have you ever wondered how movies are made? Discover how to make your own short film at MODA’s LEGO Robotics for Aspiring Filmmakers camp! Please note this camp is for rising 5th to 7th grade students.

In this camp participants will go behind the scenes and experience the filmmaking process first-hand. Using LEGO Robotics, budding filmmakers will build, prototype and design robots to star as characters in their movies. They will code and develop their robots to move, interact, and respond to different scenes and in the world around them.

Throughout the week, campers will work in design teams to create their own group films. They will develop storyboards to map out scene sequences and design custom characters together. The teams will also design sets and use LEGOs, K’Nex, and other prototyping materials to make their own unique backdrops!

Campers will practice and adopt designer mindsets through rapid prototyping, iteration and collaboration. They will brainstorm ways to create, build, and develop robotic characters, and refine them based on the challenges that present themselves along the way. Campers will have to think like directors in order to overcome obstacles that could interfere with filming.

They will make their directorial debut by shooting the scenes of their film using GoPros attached to their robots to capture incredible sights and angles! At the end of the week, campers will be introduced to Filmora - a free film editing software, where they will add music, create voiceovers, and edit their scenes into cohesive films!

Join us again later in the summer for a movie premiere at MODA, complete with yummy snacks. Following the premiere, each camper will leave with a copy of their film to take home.

Check out this virtual tour of MODA’s Designing Playful Cities exhibition from the perspective of our robotic friend!

Campers will:

  • Adopt design and engineering mindsets
  • Learn about story creation and storyboarding
  • Work collaboratively to build sets
  • Learn how to shoot and edit their own individual and group scenes
  • Learn how to code using the common block palette
  • Expand their knowledge of Lego Robotics
  • Develop creative confidence

This is a week long camp for rising 5th to 7th grade students that runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.
