Historic markers, a one-act play, community discussions and tours are being planned for the September anniversary of the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre, in which at least 25 African Americans were hunted down and lynched by a mob of white men and boys over a four-day spree. A grassroots coalition is working to restore the killings and their legacy to public memory, and activists are seeking participation from the public in staging events around the date, the Associated Press reports.

The Truth and Transformation Initiative is researching stories of victims and perpetrators and gathering descendants for public activities with the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project at Emory University. The group says it is also “working to claim memorial pillars with the inscribed names of documented lynching victims” and will host 500 community dinners across Atlanta to engage 5,000 people “in discussing the history of racial terror and violence and its legacy in our lives today.” Details: apnews.com
