The Morehouse School of Medicine has received a grant of $1.725 million from the Amerigroup Foundation aimed at narrowing Georgia’s inequity gap in maternal health. The initiative will target more than 127,000 pregnant and parenting Black women to reduce mortality and morbidity disparities through better communication, less bias, clinical care coordination, and improved performance in marginalized localities. Training of perinatal professionals and a rural residency program will expand a workforce dedicated to expectant mothers in the state. “We are confident this program’s focus on maternal health in minority communities lays a strong foundation for lifelong equality in care,” Amerigroup executive Mel Lindsey said in a press release. msm.edu
