After a deeper exploration of the percentages I have been posting of individuals being tested and the percentage of those testing positive with COVID-19, I have decided to remove those statistics from the daily report. Unfortunately, the stats are very misleading. They do not, in any way, provide any application to the broader scope of the communities tracked. Not only does the number of individuals being tested vary widely from one community to the next, the mix of the individuals being tested also varies in terms of demographics and COVID-19 “exposure.”

Welcome to the New Year of 2021!

As you review the numbers today, please keep in mind that they are bouncing from state-to-state and from one day to the next. The actual daily counts should become more representative of the actual daily tracking next Tuesday or Wednesday, once  the holidays are behind us.

Also, over the weekend, my groupings of several key states will be re-engineered to capture more relevant tracking sets. States like Iowa and Nebraska, with lower numbers, will no longer be tracked, while other states like Virginia, Louisiana and Washington will be built into the tracking mix.

As of 12:01 a.m. this morning:

  • The total number of tracked coronavirus cases accounts for 6.02 percent of the population
  • Tracked active COVID-19 cases represent 0.93 percent of the population
