Martin Luther King Jr. is often remembered as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement who led marches and practiced civil disobedience across the country.

But he was also an Atlantan. Not only was King born here, but he lived here. He was part of the city. From Auburn Avenue, where he spent his childhood and later preached at Ebenezer Baptist Church, to Vine City, where he started a home for his own family, to downtown, where he was arrested as part of a protest.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, CL’s Joeff Davis revisited the places that connect the preacher and Nobel Prize winner to Atlanta.

The annual MLK Day March and rally kicks off this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The march and rally will begin at Peachtree and Baker street and continue along Auburn Avenue to Jackson Street .
